Dedicated to Serving Coconut Creek

I am Felicia Shuman Newkirk, a former educator with Broward County Public Schools and a prior case manager for the Urban League of Broward.  I thoroughly enjoyed working with our youth and making a positive impact on their lives.I have a strong history of working with the vulnerable populations in the fields of mental health and drug treatment for over a decade.

Throughout my career, I have had the honor of working at two esteemed nonprofit organizations: MaCTown as a Administrator Assistant where I dedicated myself to supporting individuals with mental disabilities, and the Village South, a drug treatment center, where I served as a Receptionist and Behavior Therapist. My experiences in these roles equipped me with a profound understanding of the challenges faced by these communities and have honed my skills in providing compassionate, to promote well-being and recovery.

I’m a former participant with completion in the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) Citizen Academy. I have previously served on the Education Advisory Committee Board where I played a crucial role in shaping educational policies and programs. Additionally, I possess extensive experience in reaching out to colleges for scholarships, ensuring our high school graduates have access to valuable financial support for their further education

My vision is to bring more affordable living to the community of Coconut Creek. We have limited affordable housing and too many luxury developments. I also want to support seniors with rental and mortgage assistance, as they often lack family support and face disabilities. They need a voice and guidance on how to receive these available resources, just as regular citizens facing crises with rental or mortgage assistance do.

Many of these challenges are exacerbated by inflation, which has made it difficult for residents to keep up with rising costs. I will successfully expanded transportation options for seniors by introducing additional services beyond the traditional Transportation on Demand (TOTS) system. These efforts will  significantly improved mobility and accessibility for our senior community, enhancing their quality of life.

Additionally, I would like to introduce community small business development programs so that residents can utilize government funding to open small businesses if they wish. It’s time for Coconut Creek and its residents to receive the same informative resources to improve their lives just like many other citizens living in other municipalities in Broward County Florida.

I spoke at the commissioners' meeting on April 25, 2024, where I voiced my opinion on the importance of the citizens of Coconut Creek voting for the mayor. The amendment was approved and was placed on the November's Presidential Election 2024 ballot. I am already working with the elderly population in the community and have reached out to the Department of Veteran Affairs on their behalf, with the proper authorization set in place.

I have also been actively involved and have input my concerns in resolving the Monarch landfill expansion issue, demonstrating my commitment to addressing local concerns. Additionally, I am ready to work and know I am the perfect candidate for the position. My opponent is a great person, but I have a vision and understand what the City of Coconut Creek citizens needs. I know how to reach out to all officials and entities on the local, state, and federal levels.
