I am Felicia Shuman Newkirk, a former educator with Broward County Public Schools and a prior case manager for the Urban League of Broward. I thoroughly enjoyed working with our youth and making a positive impact on their lives. I have a strong history of working with the vulnerable populations in the fields of mental health and drug treatment for over a decade.
Throughout my career, I have had the honor of working at two esteemed nonprofit organizations: MaCTown as an Administrator Assistant where I dedicated myself to supporting individuals with mental disabilities, and the Village South, a drug treatment center, where I served as a Receptionist and Behavior Therapist. My experiences in these roles equipped me with a profound understanding of the challenges faced by these communities and have honed my skills in providing compassionate, to promote well-being and recovery.
I’m a former participant with completion in the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) Citizen Academy. I have previously served on the Education Advisory Committee Board where I played a crucial role in shaping educational policies and programs. Additionally, I possess extensive experience in reaching out to colleges for scholarships, ensuring our high school graduates have access to valuable financial support for their further education.
As a candidate for the Broward County School Board, I am committed to bringing fresh perspectives and innovative solutions to our district. While Felicia respects her opponent’s years of service, there are several areas where she believes she can do better: Felicia believes that our community deserves a school board that operates with complete transparency and accountability. she will push for more open decision-making processes and ensure that all actions taken by the board are communicated clearly to the public. Felicia will advocate with officials on House Bill 1267-Education to help raise our students' academic scores.
Felicia believes that It's time to prioritize the voices of parents, teachers, and students. She will advocate for regular town hall meetings and forums to foster meaningful dialogue and collaboration. Together, she said that "we can create a more inclusive and responsive school district. Felicia believes that our students deserve access to cutting-edge educational programs that prepare them for the future. She will champion initiatives that promote STEM education, arts programs, and vocational training, and free summer camp ensuring that every student has the opportunity to succeed.
The citizens can count on Felicia being responsible budgeting and financial management she believes that it is crucial for the success of our schools. She will work tirelessly to ensure that funds are allocated effectively and that every dollar spent benefits our students and teachers. The safety and well-being of our students and staff are paramount. She will advocate for enhanced school safety measures, increased mental health resources, and a supportive environment where everyone can thrive.
Every student deserves an equal opportunity to succeed, regardless of their background. She will fight for policies that promote equity and inclusion, addressing disparities in resources, opportunities, and outcomes within our district.
